4th Grade Wednesdays
Fourth grade worked hard to complete self portraits which were added to classroom writings about themselves! Love the collaboration! Early finishers were able to work on origami or free drawings. We started our COLOR unit, talking about color wheel and placement of color on the wheel. Students used TRIADIC color scheme to make mug of cocoa to their liking. We currently are working on Op Art with artist Bridget Riley.
5th Grade Thursdays
Fifth graders created tessellations in their own unique shapes. They used their imaginations to find something in the pattern while adding detail. Students then started COLOR unit. We talked about the color wheel and color theory-placement of colors on the color wheel has specific significance. ANALOGOUS colors are next to each other on color wheel- creating harmony. We made a cup of cocoa in analogous scheme adding TEXTURE.

Product Design- Shoes!!!
2nd Grade
Students used observation to draw their own shoe, basic STILL LIFE. They were then asked to create their own future design knowing what a shoe looks like. There were incredible innovations! We also studied ABSTRACT Art. We completed our LINE and SHAPE unit with crumpled paper line trace. This is easily done at home! FORM was our next unit, turning boring, flat paper into 3-D FORM! The cat sculpture allowed students to see the difference in 2D and 3D. We are now working on Color Schemes...

1st Grade
First grade worked with ABSTRACT Art. We looked at and discussed the painting to the left. Our brain is always trying to make sense of what we see. My son always called this the traveling squirrel. We created our own abstract image with all the same directions. Students also completed LINE and SHAPE unit, realizing all drawings we want to create are made with simple line and shape:)

7TH GRADE EMBROIDERY
Last quarter 7th graders had the option of crocheting, weaving, string bracelets, or embroidery for our TEXTILE unit. This was incredibly time comsuming. These two young men went over and beyond expectations and applied finish product to their backpacks. The are extremely unique and impressive. Thanks for the hard work!!!

January 2024
1st and 2nd graders will be working on weaving skills this month, starting with paper weaving using complementary colors. We will add string weaving to complete the unit.
Students started the month learning unique paper manipulations techniques. They will use techniques to create their own paper sculpture. Continuing work with paper, students make abstracted weavings.

This month we created finger weaving, making butterlies, snakes, rabbits, or other unique designs. Paper weaving is our last activity this month, challenging ourselves to weave contrasting papers, student-made, cut into 1" strips. Lots of problem solving for these students.
5th Grade
Students learned a new technique using cardboard, scissors, and yarn. Beautiful bracelets were made as well as necklaces and a headband! Thanks, Carter:)

1st Grade Art
First grade started out the year with the Elements of Art. LINE is achieved by connecting two dots. Lines are not all straight. Using line, students designed a square piece of paper which they turned into a bookmark with ORIGAMI. SHAPE was the next Element discussed. Students understood that there are two types of shapes- GEOMETRIC and ORGANIC. Students created a city collage with only geometric shapes. Finally we ended the month with organic shape. Leaves were brought in to create IMPLIED TEXTURE, making rubbings in a VARIETY of sizes and COLOR that OVERLAPPED on thier papers.

4th Grade Art
Wednesdays
Fourth graders started the year with the Super Blue Moon.
After watching a video about this special moon, students then created their own version of a Super Blue Moon using oil pastels and blending colors. Working with FORM, students created an ORIGAMI face from square paper. They celebrated DOT day with Peter H. Reynolds, connecting with an author/artist, making their own dot. Lastly students studied artist Chuck Close and learned about FACE PROPORTIONS. They made their self portrait with the proportions rules and will later use their art with their writing for a classroom project.

4th Grade
TEXTURE was studied, working with Implied and Actual textures.
Students found textures in everyday objects within their
classrooms and hallway. After filling their paper with color and
textures, students folded an origami fortune teller, making a
beautiful form.
1st Grade
Students worked with string, wrapping a VARIETY
of colors around a cardboard heart, giving it
actual TEXTURE. This was a type of random
weaving.
2nd Grade
Students made their own circle LOOM from cardboard.
They problem-solved to create the WARP and continued
adding the WEFT in a VARIETY of colored yarn. Working
loosely kept the circle flat. Some creations were tighter
and became more of a bowl shape.
3rd Grade
Students made their own traditional LOOM from cardboard.
They created the WARP and following step-by-step directions.
Then, they added the WEFT in a VARIETY of colored yarn. Working
loosely and continuing to push the weft tighter so the warp cannot
be seen.
5th Grade
Andy Warhol was studied as well as Pop Art. Students drew a popular image, then used
a transfer technique to make another three copies of their original image. Color was
added to make the images different in each presentation. Students then worked on
presentation, mounting their works onto black paper.

Color Mixing
First paint in the new room for EL! Third grade experimented with the wide range of color value when just adding a small amount of a primary color to another primary color. Yellow and blue do not make just ONE green; yellow and red do not make just ONE orange! Our purples were not so promising as the red was not a true red. Amazing learning experience for all:)
